Week Eleven- Market of Abandoned Materials (Participants)

Week of reviews from Market of Abandoned materials

Individual Reflections:

Ruth Johnson:

I really enjoyed the experience of this market, and I personally believe this was the best of all three markets. All of the stalls were really well laid out in a way that created an emotional experience that didn't feel forced, but was actually enjoyable. There was a good mix of interactive stalls and visual stalls, and they were staggered so that the flow of the market felt natural and well planned. From the reading 'Experimental Marketing' By Bernd Schmitt it was clear that they'd thought and planned well by including multiple aspects for SEMS (strategic experimental modules) Sense/act/think/feel/relate were all incorporated into their market and I think this is how their market's atmosphere felt so balanced and successful.
By focusing their theme broadly on our childhood, everyone felt included in some way. My personal favourite stall was the return to sender stall. Where we drew something random relating to our childhood on old mail that would actually get returned. I think this stall intrigued me the most as it took the project a step further, going beyond the classroom space and back out into the 'real world', and also cause it makes me laugh a little thinking what the banks and official companies may think when they get random mail back with weird unexplainable doodles on them. All in all this market was really cool and felt like a really fun space to be in.

Stephanie Howard:

The whole feel and atmosphere of this market worked well in my opinion. The flow and way finding of it all was very clear and set out and we all knew where to go. We wern't left waiting around for people. Their themes was taking you back to your childhood and showing the nostalgia that we don't really look back to or get to experience so much anymore. It gave a way for everyone to feel included in this sense because we all had a childhood. I enjoyed the whole idea of the market and the way of them using abandoned materials. The stall that I enjoyed most was the one with the letters. I liked the idea of getting to draw on a letter and it being sent back to the sender. So a person would just randomly get a letter with some drawings or some forms on it. This had the childhood look back of using post man pat on it which was a well known children show relating to most people in the market place. Over all it worked well in all forms and stood out more out of all three markets.

David:

The Abandoned Materials market took us on a journey back to our childhood, various stalls offered a nostalgic feeling. There was one stall in particular that had all of our childhood toys on display, some of which was a figurine of “Yugi” from Yugioh, a Tamagotchi, Pikachu figurine, etc. We were instructed to vote using lego blocks on which toy gave us the most the most nostalgic feeling. I also thought that this stall used abandoned materials the best because not only did they reused childhood toys that we potentially had in the past, this also created a strong nostalgic feeling for me when I saw toys that I had when I was a child. Their use of space was really well thought out, in terms of maximizing their given space, it was evident as they used all three floors of block 12 for their market, starting out on the first floor, they had a short welcoming for visitors to their market, after this we were instructed to go upstairs to the second floor, where we were introduced to the safety procedures of the space, on the second floor there were a couple of stalls, and on the third floor was the rest.

Flore:
The Abandoned Materials Market was a really great journey/ experience and theme involved taking us back to our childhood. I really enjoyed this market because they had toys and activities that I would use to do but had completely forgot about. Their layout in block 12 was really creative, you started off on level C by crawling through a tube and once you had done all the market stalls you finished on level E. I think as a market they worked really well at recycling materials and overall i had a great time participating in this market.

Group Reflection: (200 words)

The Abandoned Materials market took us on a journey back to our childhood, the various stalls offered a nostalgic feeling. All of the stalls were really well laid out in a way that created an emotional experience that didn't feel forced, and was actually enjoyable. It didn’t just feel like another class project, but felt like a really well planned event that would fit well in the ‘real world’ (we can imagine visiting some place like this as an official wellington interactive art exhibit.)
There was one stall that had all of our childhood toys on display, some of which was a figurine of “Yugi” from Yugioh, a Tamagotchi, Pikachu figurine, etc. We were instructed to vote using lego blocks on which toy gave us the most the most nostalgic feeling. This really included all of the market participants as they’d found a way to make sure everyone could relate to at least one of their toys.
All in all this market was really cool and felt like a fun, exciting space to be in.
